Key Lime & Elderflower Margarita
Posted in : Cocktails on by : Julie B Wilson Tags: St-Germain, Tequila, Traveling Trivet
February 22nd is Margarita Day!
This simple recipe is a refreshing surprise with only 3 ingredients. It was sort of a first time success, I know I wanted to try the combo of the key lime and St-Germain in a margarita, so I made a cocktail with equal parts of each and it was perfection!
While Pintrest surfing I started seeing cocktail recipes with this liquor called St-Germain. I looked it up, it is made from elderflower, a small, white flower that blooms in Europe It sounded interesting so I splurged and bought a bottle. I was a little nervous because I have allergies to many flower based drinks, but I had not problem with this. So I started experimenting with it.
My first introduction to fresh key limes was when I took a trip to Mexico for a wedding, It was the lime of choice and all the cantinas and restaurants. I look forward to the season when I can find them in my local, Wyoming, grocery store and not spend a fortune. I pick up a bag, make a margarita, and pretend I'm on a warm beach.
A key lime is smaller than the traditional limes we find here in Wyoming. It is tart, sweet, and aromatic with a more floral flavor. Which is probably why it pairs so well with the elderflower liquor. The downside is that it's thinner skin on the key lime makes it go bad faster than other citrus in my refrigerator. They are picked green, ripe when yellow, and dead in my refrigerator a few days after they turn yellow.
If you are going to make these in a batch, a 1lb bag has about a dozen, enough for 2 or 3 cocktails. I tried replacing the key limes with regular limes and it was not as good and a waste of expensive St-Germain.
