Anaheim to Zia Pueblo – A Chile Pepper Shopping Chart

... for the Chile Newbie
Chile by any other name....
Do we say it chile, chili, or chilli? In everyday English, chile, chili, and chilli all refer to the the fruit. In New Mexican English, chile refers to the fruit & "chili" refers to the chili con carne dish. You can mix it up with Green chile chili (chili con carne made with green chiles). And to make it more confusing, some varieties are referred to as "peppers", like jalapeño pepper & ghost pepper. None of these should be confused with the nation of Chile though. No matter how you spell it, adding a bit of chile, fresh, dried, or canned, can add a ton of flavor to your dish.
One day, while chile shopping I ran across some chiles I was not familiar with and could not find a helpful chart whale standing there with my iPhone looking confused. Necessity is the mother of invention.. or blogs... These Charts are for my reference while shopping, please feel free to bookmark on your mobile device for easy access.
The Scoville scale (SHU) is a measurement of the pungency (spiciness or "heat") of chili peppers.

When I was out shopping for dried chili I felt like I needed a chili shopping guide on my mobile device to look up info on chilies available at my local store. I had NO IDEA there were so many! My local grocery only had about 6 of these, and I lucked out and picked a good combo for my recipe BUT but now I am on a chili knowledge quest!

Fresh Chilies
I live in growing zone 4, first and last frost dates are:
- Average Last Frost: 05/15-6/15
- Average First Frost: 9/1-9/30
Each June I plant a variety of peppers from starts, not seeds, in my container garden. I noted on my chart which peppers I tried to grow, and how well they did:
- ☠ Died before growing peppers
- 🌱 Grew 1 or 2 peppers
- 🌱🌱 Grew a few peppers
- 🌱🌱🌱 Grew many peppers
I planed 10 Varieties of peppers in my 2021 garden, tune in this fall for a pepper report!
